Mary Glowrey – Liliane Brekelmans (MGLB) Disability Award 2020

The Catholic Health Association of India (CHAI) in partnership with the Liliane Fonds (LF), Netherlands virtually organized the Mary Glowrey Liliane Brekelmans (MGLB) 2020 Disability Award on 15th December 2020 at the CHAI Directorate,   Secunderabad.

The awards are instituted to honour exemplary work in the field of disability by individuals and organizations. CHAI in partnership with LF has empowered over 33000childrenandyouthlivingwithdisabilityinthepast26years.Tomarkthis occasionandtheplatinumjubileeofCHAIinreachingtheunreachedsince1943, CHAI and LF instituted the MGLB awards. The awards are instituted in two categories;forindividualsandfororganizationswhoarerolemodelsinthefield of disability. The awards are instituted separately for nominees from CHAI network and from outside the CHAInetwork.

Nominations were invited through the website www.chaiawards.org from across the nation-for organizations and individuals. Over 164 nominations  were receivedacrossthefourcategoriesforacumulativeprizeamountofRs.10lakhs.

The prizes were awarded in the individual category to Fr. Dr. Jose Antony CMI, Director of VOSARD from CHAI network and Mr. Danish Mahajan, founder of Udaan Radio from outside CHAI network. The prizes were awarded in the institutional category to Nirmaladasi Seva Society from CHAI network and Sense International India from outside the CHAI network. Additionally, 8 individuals and 8 organizations were honored with commendation prizes.

Sr. Victoria Narisetti JMJ, President of CHAI inaugurated the online event and welcomedtheparticipants.TheeventwasmoderatedbyFrGeorgeKannanthanam, Director, Project Vision who facilitated the proceedings. The event was graced by dignitaries including Mr. Steven Hendrik Berdenis van Berlekom, The Director at LilianeFoundationandMIVA,Netherlands, Mr. HenkHofste,Theformer-headof International Partnership and Program Department – LF, TheNetherlands,

Mrs. Minnie Mathew, I.A.S – Chief Secretary –  retired,  Telangana,  Dr.  Nathan Grills, Associate Professor at Melbourne University,  Australia  Mr.  Somchai Rungsilp, Manager of Asia-Pacific Development Center on Disability (APCD) and other National Representatives.

The award jury including Fr. Mathew Abraham, Director General, CHAI, Anneke Donker,  Manager  of  the  International Partnerships and Programmes Department at Liliane Foundation, Dr. Sara Varughese, Country Director and Managing Trustee – CBM India, Ms. Shanti Raghavan, Founder of Enable India, Bangalore, Mr. Venkatesh Balakrishna,  President of the CBR Global Network also graced the event. A wide spectrum of disability stakeholders were present, including winners of the award from the past year, LINC-Asia and Liliane Fond representative and  Engage  Disability network representatives national and international experts from disability organizations, partners from the disability program,  individuals  living  with disability and disability advocates from across the country.

The award ceremony was interspersed with spirited cultural performances by children and youth with disabilities. The virtual event closed with a vote of thanks from Fr. Mathew Abraham, Director General, CHAI with a renewed vigour and enthusiasm to work towards the cause of disability among all participants.
